We're back! (Hopefully)

After an 11 month absence of new content on The Nightly Oklahoman, I can finally say with guarded confidence that we will be back shortly. I can't yet say exactly when I'll be out and around again for sure, but I will get out there again. After a couple surgeries and a lot of feeling like crap, the worst seems to be over according to the doctors.

A bout with cancer has kept me down for nigh onto a year now, but the prognosis finally looks pretty good that I have beaten it... For now at least. It'll take about 4 more years of checkups, testing, and more than likely more sugery before anyone is truly confident with that statement.

For now at least, my plans are to get stronger, put on some weight, and go back to doing the things I miss doing.

Oklahoma speaks

Oklahoma speaks

11/02/2010 - Oklahoma City - Oklahomans went to the polls today to exercise the only true control over the future of the state and federal government that we have. The Nightly Oklahoman does not generally report on politics or political figures, that's not part of our scope. Elections are an event however, and can even be entertaining at times, and that does fit into our scope. More than that, they are an important part of life in this country, so in this installment, we present the results of the votes cast by you, the residents of Oklahoma.

To keep this item as brief as possible, the link to the results at the Oklahoma State Election Board is presented below.

Ultimate Terrors returns

Ultimate Terrors returns

10/22/2010-Oklahoma City- Friday evening October 22 I had the pleasure of visiting Ultimate Terrors haunted house(s) located at 5537 NW Expressway in Oklahoma City. It occupies the same space as the old Service Merchandise store behind Hideaway Pizza between Meridian Ave. and Macarthur Blvd. Producer Jim Bates, co-producer Darrell Duer Jr., and a host of others began construction of the three sections of Ultimate Terror on August 15th. This is the third year of operations for the Ultimate Terror triplex of exhibits, and it is billed as the scariest place in Oklahoma.

Because of the enormous volume of spam messages of late, non-registered users may no longer leave comments on articles published here. We have long had the comments set up for approval before you could see any comments left, but the increase in spam bot traffic pushing medications and clothing accessories has become absurd.

We are simply tired of having to go through 20 to 300 comments a day and deleting this stuff. The other major change is that all new registrations will now have to be approved by an administrator instead of relying on the email verification system. This has been done for the same reason.

Norman train stationIf you want an inexpensive, fun getaway, consider a trip on the Heartland Flyer  which makes a daily round trip between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth.  The train is subsidized by both the Oklahoma and Texas departments of transportation, making it very affordable for the general public.

Red, White, and Boom

Fireworks over OKC07-05-10 - Oklahoma City - Even with the threat of rain in the air, and even occasional sprinkles, many of the 4th of July celebrations went off without any real problems this weekend. Some were delayed until next weekend, but for the most part, the weather was willing to cooperate long enough in the evening hours for fireworks displays to continue.

Fair game

09/21/2010 - Oklahoma City - The 103rd State Fair of Oklahoma began on Thursday, Sept. 16th. That's 103 years of entertaining children and adults alike with innovative, unusual, and unique events not found anywhere else. The fair attracts vendors and attractions from all over the country. These include the games on the Midway, displays in the various buildings on the grounds, and dozens of food stands featuring selections from around the world.

66 Bowl strikes out after 51 years

08/07/2010 - Oklahoma City - Oklahoma City's oldest bowling alley will close forever on Friday September 3. The iconic landmark opened in 1959 along historic Route 66, and has served fun and entertainment to Oklahomans and travelers ever since. It has been a popular stop on the pro bowling tour, and has been featured on TV many times in the past during those events.

Want to write for us?

Do you like to go to concerts, club events, MMA fights, or other types of entertainment? Are you an aspiring writer or a journalism student? Can you tell a story in a way that interests others? If you can answer yes to at least 2 of those questions, we would like to talk to you. I'll tell you up front that these would be voluntary freelance positions. That means no pay for the time being, but if you write well, and can snap some good photos to go with a story, that could change.
